SCREEN SIZES
WHO SAYS SIZE DOESN'T MATTER?
DISPLAY
DEVICES
Display devices such as monitors and television sets are built to
meet different specifications for size and display standards. Most
monitors can be adjusted to display a certain number of pixels (tiny
colored dots) on the screen. Just because you have a 17-inch monitor,
doesn’t mean your display presents a set number of pixels.
The diagram below shows the most common display settings as measured
in pixels.

TEST
YOUR DISPLAY
You can test your monitor now by clicking

DESIGNING
FOR THE SIZE-SHIFTING PAGE
Sites must be designed to lay out correctly on all display devices.
Putting the issues of interaction, animation, and audio-video content
aside, just laying out a simple paragraph can require a lot of thought.
One user with a 640 x 480 screen sees

While another user with an 1152 x 864 screen can be
viewing the same web page, and depending on the HTML formatting
and layout, can see:
| this: |
this: |
this: |
or this: |

When you add in factors such as animation, color issues,
type issues, and download time, the complexity of these projects
grows exponentially. Every detail of a professionally designed web
site must be planned out in advance. Simple laws of size and proportion
become technology issues. We have over 6 years of experience designing
specifically for the web. We sweat the details so you don’t
have to.
