IMAGE QUALITY VS. DOWNLOAD TIME
THE RAZORS EDGE
Much of the lure of the web lies in its graphical
nature. Web pages can include text, graphics, animation, and audio/video.
However, to create pages with practical download
times, , there are limits to the amount of data they can include.
The larger the size of the image file (in bytes), the slower the
download.
In order to optimize download times for images, we
can utilize graphics compression methods to create smaller files.
However, this compression results in a loss of image quality. GIF
and JPEG are the two most popular web image formats. Both are used
for different types of images, and they both lose image quality
when images are compressed. Below are four identical photos with
varying levels of compression. Click on the thumbnail to observe
its image quality and download speed.
